How it works
The recorder uses your browser's getUserMedia to open a live stream from your
webcam and microphone, which it shows in the preview so you can frame the shot — that preview is
the camera test. When you record, MediaRecorder encodes the same stream into a
video file as you go. Both steps run on your device: the frames are captured and encoded
locally, the file is held in memory until you press Stop, and nothing is uploaded at any point.
After stopping, the recording loads back into the same player so you can watch it before saving.
How to record from your webcam
- Press Test camera and allow camera and microphone access to see yourself.
- Press Start recording once your framing and lighting look right.
- Press Stop & save when you are done; the clip loads for review.
- Watch it back, then click Download to keep the video.
The page must be served over HTTPS and you must grant permission — both are browser privacy safeguards. The preview is muted on purpose so your own microphone does not echo through the speakers while you record.
Why record in the browser instead of installing software
Webcam footage is about as personal as media gets — your face, your home, your voice — so uploading it to an online recorder to process is the last thing you want. Recording in your browser keeps the video on your own device with nothing to install and no account to create, and produces a clean, watermark-free file. It also avoids the safety concerns around free file-handling sites: in March 2025 the FBI warned that some free online tools were being used to spread malware, so keeping the recording local is the safer choice.

Is the webcam test the same as recording?
The live preview is the camera test. When you press "Test camera" (or start recording), the tool asks for camera and microphone permission and shows your video feed immediately — so you can check framing, lighting and that the right camera is selected before you record anything. If you see yourself, the webcam works and the browser has access. Nothing is saved during the test; the recording only begins when you press Start.
Is my webcam recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The camera and microphone feed is captured by your browser straight into memory on your device using MediaRecorder, and the finished video is saved locally when you download it. Nothing is streamed to a server, there is no account, and the recording is cleared from memory when you close the tab. Webcam video is inherently personal, which is exactly why an on-device, no-upload recorder is the right tool.
Why does it save as WebM rather than MP4?
Browsers record to the format their built-in encoder supports, and for in-browser capture that is almost always WebM (VP8 or VP9 video with Opus audio). WebM plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, VLC and most modern players. Safari may instead produce an MP4. If you need a specific MP4 for older software, record here and then convert the file with the Video Converter on this site, which also runs in your browser.
Can I record video without sound, or sound without video?
This tool records both the camera and the microphone together, which is what most webcam recordings need — a talking-head clip, a video message, an audition tape. If you only want audio, use the Voice Recorder on this site; if you want to remove the sound from a finished recording, use the Mute Video tool. Keeping each job to a focused tool keeps the controls simple.
Which browsers and devices are supported?
Webcam recording works in recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari, on both desktop and mobile, because camera access and MediaRecorder are widely supported. The page must be served over HTTPS and you must grant camera and microphone permission — both are privacy safeguards. On a laptop with multiple cameras, your browser or operating system lets you pick which one to use.
Does it add a watermark or cost anything?
No watermark, no sign-up and no payment. It uses only what your browser already provides, so the recording is clean and entirely yours. Many free online and desktop recorders add branding, cap the length, or require an account; this one does not.
